What data the GoMeter app collects, why, and what choices you have.
Effective date:
Introduction
This policy explains what data the GoMeter app collects, why, and what choices you have. It covers GoMeter for Android (Google Play) and GoMeter for iOS (Apple App Store), which behave the same.
GoMeter is a speedometer and trip tracker. It has no user accounts and no server of its own.
Summary
Your location and trips never leave your device. We use Google Analytics and Google Firebase for anonymous usage statistics, crash reports and app messages. Feedback comes to us only when you choose to send it.
- Precise location, speed, altitude, trips: stay on your device, to show your speed and record trips.
- App usage events, device and app info: Google Firebase (Analytics), to understand how the app is used.
- Crash reports: Google Firebase (Crashlytics), to find and fix bugs.
- App instance identifiers, Advertising ID (Android): Google Analytics and Google Firebase, to count installs and deliver messages.
- Feedback you send, your email if you add it, app and device info: Google Sheets and Gmail in our Google account, to answer you and improve the app.
We don't sell your data, show ads, or share data for advertising.
Data that stays on your device
GoMeter processes the following data only on your device. We never receive it, and it is not sent to Google Analytics, Firebase, or anyone else.
- Precise location (GPS): read while the app is open, and in the background only while you are recording a trip.
- Speed, distance and altitude: calculated from your location.
- Trip history: start and end time, duration, distance, speeds, the recorded route points, and the name you give a trip. Stored in a local database.
- Settings: your speed unit (km/h or mph).
Your operating system may include this data in device backups you have turned on: Android backup to your Google account, or iCloud backup on iOS. These backups are under your control and governed by Google's or Apple's terms. We can't access them.
Data collected by Google Analytics and Google Firebase
GoMeter uses Google Analytics and Google Firebase services, provided by Google LLC and Google Ireland Limited. Google processes this data on our behalf as a data processor. None of it includes your name, email or precise location.
- Google Analytics for Firebase: app instance ID; on Android the Advertising ID; on iOS the identifier for vendor; app usage events (sessions, screens viewed); device model, OS version, language; approximate location (country or city) derived from your masked IP address. Purpose: usage statistics to improve the app.
- Firebase Crashlytics: crash stack traces, Crashlytics installation ID, device model, OS version, free memory and disk space, app version. Purpose: finding and fixing crashes.
- Firebase Cloud Messaging: Firebase installation ID, app version. Purpose: delivering notifications sent to all users.
- Firebase In-App Messaging: Firebase installation ID; message views, taps and dismissals. Purpose: showing occasional messages inside the app.
On iOS, GoMeter doesn't ask for permission to track you, so the Advertising Identifier (IDFA) is not collected. All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
Feedback you send us
You can share an idea or report a problem in Settings › Help improve GoMeter. Nothing is sent until you tap Send. With each feedback we receive:
- Your message: what you write, and whether it's an idea or a problem.
- Email address: only if you add it, so we can reply to you.
- App and device details: GoMeter version, platform and OS version, device model, language, time zone and when you sent it. They help us reproduce problems.
Feedback never includes your location or your trips. It is sent encrypted (HTTPS) through Google Apps Script to a Google Sheet where we keep track of feedback, and a copy is emailed to us at kimaladev@gmail.com. Both are in our own Google account, stored by Google under its terms and privacy policy. We use feedback only to answer you and to improve GoMeter, and we never share or sell it.
Permissions
GoMeter asks only for the permissions it needs. You can refuse or revoke any of them in your device settings.
- Precise location (Android, iOS): measure speed and distance.
- Location in the background (Android foreground service, iOS background location): keep recording a trip when the screen is off. Only during a trip, shown by a notification on Android and by the location indicator and Live Activity on iOS.
- Notifications (Android, iOS): show the ongoing trip and occasional messages.
- Internet access (Android, iOS): send statistics and crash reports to Google Analytics and Firebase, and send the feedback you share with us.
- Advertising ID (Android): added by Google Analytics for Firebase to count users.
Without location access, GoMeter can't measure speed. Everything else works without the other permissions.
How we use data and legal bases
We use data only to run, fix and improve GoMeter. We don't use it for advertising, profiling or automated decisions.
- Measuring speed and recording trips: location and trips (on your device only). Legal basis: performance of the service you requested (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Fixing crashes: Crashlytics data. Legal basis: legitimate interest in a working app (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Understanding app usage: Analytics data. Legal basis: legitimate interest in improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Sending notifications and in-app messages: Firebase installation ID. Legal basis: your consent through the notification permission (Art. 6(1)(a)).
- Answering your feedback: your message, your email if you add it, and app and device details. Legal basis: your consent, given when you tap Send (Art. 6(1)(a)).
Sharing
We don't sell or rent your data, and we don't share it with advertisers or data brokers. The only recipient is Google, as the processor running Google Analytics and Firebase for us under the Google Cloud and Firebase data processing terms, which give your data the same protection as this policy. Feedback you send is kept in our own Google account (Google Sheets and Gmail), and we don't share it with anyone else.
We may disclose data if the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order.
Retention and deletion
We do not host independent user databases or account systems. Telemetry and crash reports stored on Firebase servers are retained according to Firebase's standard retention schedules and automatically expire over time. Feedback you send us stays in our feedback sheet and inbox only as long as we need it to answer you or improve the app, and we delete it whenever you ask.
Your rights and choices
You can ask us at kimaladev@gmail.com to access, correct, delete, restrict or export your data, or object to its processing. We reply within 30 days.
- EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR): you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
- California (CCPA/CPRA) and other US states: you have the right to know, delete and correct your data. We don't sell or share personal information as those laws define it, and we treat everyone equally whether or not they use these rights.
- Stop data collection: revoke location or notification permission in your device settings, reset your Advertising ID on Android under Settings › Privacy › Ads, or uninstall the app.
Children, security and international transfers
- Children: GoMeter is not directed at children under 13 (under 16 in the EU), and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we'll delete any Google Analytics or Firebase data we hold.
- Security: data stays in the app's private storage on your device, protected by the operating system. Data sent to Google Analytics or Firebase is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and stored by Google with its own security measures.
- Encryption in transit: all telemetry transmitted by Firebase SDKs is encrypted in transit using secure protocols (HTTPS/TLS).
- International transfers: Google may process Analytics and Firebase data outside your country, including in the United States. Transfers from the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland are covered by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses in Google's data processing terms.
Changes and contact
We'll post any change to this policy at this address and update the effective date. If a change affects how we use your data, we'll also tell you in the app before it applies.
